1. It creeps me out. I hate being touched or even looked at in public. I won’t even let my boyfriend hug or kiss me in public. I really really hate it.

2. Because my first reason isn’t normally enough for most people, I let a girl braid my hair in high school once (against my better judgment). She had been begging me since we were first in the same class together and I finally agreed. She pulled my hair, intentionally I think, and made the braid hella tight even though I told her it was uncomfortable. Then when she was done, she seriously threatened to cut my braid off. She was holding scissors in her hand and everything, asking me, “What happens when Indians cut their hair?”

green-street-politics:

Women’s clothing
North Carolina

I am bending over a table, folding tshirts, when suddenly someone grabs my ponytail.

I try to turn around to see the problem, but hear a voice saying “hold still, just hold still a moment.”

My hair is very long, and I’m thinking at this point that I am caught on something, so I stand very still, while I feel a yank at my ponytail. Finally, I seem to be free.

I turn, look behind me, and find a very smug looking woman holding a large portion of my hair—cut off!

“I wanted to show my stylist this color, it’s so lovely!”

Security answered as I started screaming and freaking out at the woman, and she ended up coming on assault charges.

Her excuse, “She’s just a worker, she should be flattered!” didn’t go over very well. Additionally, the police were not amused by her begging to have my hair back!

I ended up needing a short, above shoulder length cut to cover up the damage, losing about 10 inches of hair, which I donated. The store was nice enough to cover the cost of the hairdo.

Read more funny stories at NotAlwaysRight.com!

this is horrific.

My blood pressure went up just reading that story. Someone would have died if that shit happened to me, I swear to god.

People who fuck up and sincerely apologize are my heroes.

People who fuck up and sincerely apologize are my heroes.

freshmouthgoddess:

They always ask me how tall I am and I always lie and say 5 feet 10 inches. Next time, I am going to get more adventurous. If they ask me ‘what color are you?’ I am going to say white.”

-
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan on being detained at the U.S. Airport—twice. (Once, he was detained while promoting a film called “My Name is Khan” which was ironically about a person with the last name Khan suffering from repeated racial profiling.)

Multiple actors and other prominent individuals in the film industry with the last name “Khan” have been detained when entering the country. Irrfan Khan (The Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire, Spider-man) described the three times he was stopped—while on the way to receive honors for his roles in films such as The Namesake—as “humiliating.” Actor Aamir Khan was stopped and stripped searched in 2002. Director Kabir Khan, was reportedly detained at least three times in 2008 while filming in the United States. The New York Times ended up remarking on The Dangers of Fying While Khan

This much is clear:

Despite being an incredibly common surname, in the United States, Khan is a racialized last name and those who carry it suffer from additional, insulting, stigma and scrutiny.

There is no shortage of talented actors of South Asian descent whether from within the United States, from the UK, or Bollywood—and many of them even have the last name of Khan.

With Star Trek Into Darkness the name “Khan” is once again stigmatized as antagonistic, but the actors named Khan, the Khans of the world, and those who look like Khans once again have no voice about how they are represented in American media.

If you’re an award winning actor named Khan, you will still get stopped and humiliated at the airport. When that rare character in American media finally shows up sharing your name, he will be played by a white British man. That actor will wear your name for one movie and sneer and strut to great critical acclaim. You will wear your racialized name, your skin color, and hope you don’t get detained another time.

(via racebending)

So fuck Star Trek and FUCK JJ Abrams and FUCKKKK Cucumberface

Fringe

Rebecca Belmore (Anishnaabe)

Rebecca Belmore often uses the body to address violence against First Nations people, especially women. The woman in Fringe assumes the same reclining pose as the beautiful odalisques depicted by nineteenth- and twentieth-century European artists, but bears an ugly slash from shoulder to hip. The thin rivulets of blood that run from the gash are composed of small red beads, a detail that evokes both Belmore’s Anishinabe heritage and the trauma inflicted on indigenous peoples. Despite the graveness of the woman’s injury, Belmore’s Fringe is also about healing. The wound is not fatal; she has the strength to recover. But the scar will never disappear.

i’m interested in putting together a mental health zine focused on social anxiety disorder. social anxiety hates showing its face, but we need to express ourselves. please submit anything about social anxiety that you want to share: comics/humor, poetry, personal writing, opinions, therapeutic insights, lists of ways you cope, relevant quotes, resource recommendations, collages, illustrations, photography, unsent letters, ruminations, anything!

i want to put this zine together because i want to put a face to the disorder—so little is known about social anxiety sufferers because we rarely show up for help or support groups. years ago, the pharmaceutical industry put out a series of Zoloft advertisements depicting social anxiety sufferers as sad white pills who blush & get stomach problems at parties. while such symptoms are a problem among many of us, i think we’re more complex than sad little white pills at a party. we range from agoraphobic homebodies to chatty social butterflies who still get the butterflies, with our own thoughts & struggles & ways of coping. if you can’t think of something to submit, try sending in a selfie (self-portrait) &/or a little about yourself & what you think of social anxiety, just to add to the multiplicity of who we are.

one of the symptoms of social anxiety is worrying too much what others think of us—you can submit material anonymously or under a pseudonym. please add a name/website if you want your piece credited, or contact info if you want feedback/dialogue on what you submit. there’s no deadline for this project, although i’d like to have it done sometime this year. i’m thinking of making it half-sized (5.5”x8.5”), so you can send in something in that size or letter-sized. the zine will be in black & white. free copies will be given to those who contribute.

i don’t know what to call this zine yet. anyone have any recommendations for a title? please submit them here!

flora-file:
